What looks like a simple shower fix can turn into a real problem fast. This Delta Monitor valve in Fife had a failed cartridge - pretty routine stuff. But when we pulled the handle, the screw was completely seized. That's where most jobs go sideways.
A seized handle screw is the kind of thing that pushes some plumbers toward a full valve replacement just to avoid the headache. We don't work that way. We took our time, worked through the seized fastener carefully, and got the handle off without wrecking the trim. Saving existing trim matters - it keeps the wall intact and avoids a much bigger repair.
Once we had access, we pulled the old cartridge out. You can see the wear on it - the rubber seals were done and the internals had clearly given up. That's what causes the classic problem where you can't get the temperature right, or hot and cold water feel like they're fighting each other. A fresh Delta replacement cartridge sorted it out completely.
This is exactly the kind of job that defines our approach to general plumbing work. Repair first. Replace only when there's actually no other option. It saves our customers money and keeps the scope of work where it belongs - focused on fixing the real problem, not upselling a bigger job.
Hot and cold are balanced, the trim is intact, and the valve is working the way it should. That's the goal on every call we go on.
